The hit story Dirty Dancing has taken the world by storm ever since it first emerged as a movie in 1987 with Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey dancing together and falling in love. But that big screen version is not where the story ends as it found a new lease of life when it was adapted to the West End and Broadway theatre scene in this hit musical called Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story On Stage.
First it appeared at the Aldwych Theatre and it had a successful run there until 2011. Now it takes pride of place at the Piccadilly Theatre, where audiences can witness the hit musical numbers such as (I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life, plus some stand-out performances from the cast.
The story follows the Houseman family as they head to the Kellerman summer resort in the Catskill Mountains, New York. The daughter of the family is ‘Baby’ Houseman and she is the one that meets Johnny, the dance instructor who teaches her some raunchy dance moves. Eventually a romance blossoms between the two, but one that has an obstacle in the way with Baby’s father, who forbids the relationship once he mistakenly believes Johnny impregnated the character of Penny, who requires medical help after a botched abortion.
There are plenty of twists and turns in Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story On Stage and audiences cannot get enough of the songs, the dance numbers and the romantic story. After all, it is a story that won the hearts of audiences around the world when the movie was released, cementing Patrick Swayze as a Hollywood heartthrob and ensuring that the classic song (I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life has a place in popular culture.
